How it actually works
A black hole begins when a massive star runs out of fuel and collapses under its own weight. This collapse crushes the star's matter into a point of infinite density called a .
Because all this mass is squeezed into such a tiny space, the gravitational force becomes immense. This invisible pull creates a surrounding area where escape is impossible.
The point of no return is called the event horizon. Once an object passes this line, it is pulled inward toward the center, unable to overcome the extreme gravitational force.
Because light cannot escape, we cannot see black holes directly; however, we can detect them by watching how their gravity affects nearby stars and gas clouds.
The Infinite Waterfall
Imagine a river flowing toward an incredibly steep, invisible waterfall. If you are swimming far upstream, you can still turn back. But once you cross the edge of the waterfall, the current becomes so strong that no amount of swimming can get you back to the calm water, regardless of how fast you move.

Observing Cygnus X-1
Astronomers identified Cygnus X-1 as a black hole by observing a nearby blue star. Gas from the star is being pulled toward an unseen companion, heating up and emitting X-rays as it spirals into the black hole's reach.
Why it matters
Studying black holes helps physicists understand the most extreme conditions in the universe, testing the limits of gravity and our current laws of physics.
Current science cannot fully explain what happens inside a black hole because our existing theories of gravity and quantum mechanics conflict at the singularity.
